Why has a barcode been stuck to our letterbox?

Someone has pasted a barcode on to our letterbox - is this to check our postman or some other more sinister reason?

1. Never heard of that before. I'd take it off.
2. do your neighbours have one to? i would take it off
3. I have no idea why anyone would do that except as a joke. Having said that, perhaps barcodes on letterboxes is the way of the future.... I can see some good uses for them there ;)
