Why are some mailboxes by the street and others are near the front door?

In certain areas of my town the mailboxes are on the street and the postal worker drives to deliver the mail. In other areas the boxes are by the front door and the postal worker has to walk around with the mail to deliver it. Why is this? And can you put your mailbox by your door if the rest of your neighborhood has mailboxes on the street?

1. Some of it depends on how far away the house sits from the curb. I think if it's over 50 ft. , the mailbox has to be on the curb (I'm not sure on the exact distance though).
2. It depends on the area and the traffic. Also no you can't put yours by the door. My mom and I live about 4 or 5 blocks from each other hers is at her door mine it on the street. It depends on the traffic.
3. My mailbox doesn't fit either one of those places. I live in a townhouse, so our mailbox is a few houses down.
